The three challenges of Fjällräven Polar 2023

To apply for Fjällräven Polar, you’ll need to complete three challenges. Although they vary in theme, they will all encourage you to reflect on your relationship with nature and the conditions you could face during the expedition. Time to get creative and, remember – have fun! Read on for the full challenge description. Good luck!

Before you start, a quick reminder...

For your application to be successful, you must complete all three challenges by posting them to your own Instagram profile by Sunday 13th November. To ensure we see your content, set your Instagram profile to “public” and tag Fjällräven in each post using the official Fjällräven Instagram account, @fjallravenofficial, and the hashtag created for this expedition: #FjallravenPolar2023. Also, each entry must include the number of each challenge: #Challenge1, #Challenge2 or #Challenge3.

Challenge 1: Your motives

Fjällräven Polar is a tough expedition. The days will be long. Conditions may be harsh and unforgiving. How you live, work and travel with your teammates and your pack of sled dogs will be crucial, and there will be work to do when you’re tired and hungry.

However, since the first Fjällräven Polar in 1997, this expedition has had a transformative effect on the lives of previous participants, bringing them closer to nature in ways they never thought possible.

We want to know why you want to join the 2023 team. What makes you want to sleep in temperatures as low as minus 30°C, or ride a dog sled for 300km? Fjällräven Polar will be different from anything you have done before. Why do you want to do it? How do you believe your life will change through this experience? Watch the video:

Broaden your horizons. Test your outdoor skills to the limit. Realise a dream. These are some of the reasons why people join Fjällräven Polar. Whatever you focus on, tell us your story and your motives!

Respond by uploading a video, photos, imagery, text, or any other creative content to Instagram by Sunday 13th November. Remember to tag your submission with Fjällräven’s official Instagram account @fjallravenofficial, as well as #FjallravenPolar2023 and #Challenge1

Challenge 2: Get closer to Fjällräven Polar

According to the United Nations, nearly 70% of the world’s population will live in cities by 2050*. To experience real wilderness is rare nowadays.

With that in mind, what can you do to best prepare for this once in a lifetime winter adventure, where conditions will constantly shift? How can you use your current surroundings to get closer to what you might come across during Fjällräven Polar?

This challenge is about getting closer to nature in your own way. If you earn a spot on Fjällräven Polar, you’ll be living completely on nature’s terms. How close can you get to nature in your ordinary life to prepare for this expedition?  Watch the video:

You could test yourself in winter conditions or leverage your unique skills to meet the challenges this expedition might bring. Take us on a journey as you prepare for life above the Arctic Circle – consider a night under the stars or pitch your tent somewhere unexpected.
Do you have any fears you want to overcome – and importantly, could you overcome them before leaving for Fjällräven Polar?

There are no right or wrong answers – just your creativity and your passion. Good luck!

Respond by uploading a video, photos, imagery, text, or any other creative content to Instagram by Sunday 13th November. Remember to tag your submission with Fjällräven’s official Instagram account @fjallravenofficial, as well as #FjallravenPolar2023 and #Challenge2

Challenge 3: Live a more sustainable life

Here at Fjällräven, we believe that the more time we spend in nature, the more we grow appreciation, love and respect for it. In Sweden, we have something called ‘Allemansrätt’ or right to roam. This law gives everyone access to the vast landscapes of the Swedish countryside. But with great access comes great responsibility.

We all have a responsibility to ensure we leave the trail in a better shape than when we found it. How might you, in your daily life, give back to nature and live a more sustainable life?
Could you walk that extra mile to leave nature in a better shape than when you entered it? Or could you encourage those around you to appreciate nature in a new way? Watch the video:

Your response could involve anything from picking up trash on your local trail to repairing your outdoor gear in an inspiring way.

Respond by uploading a video, photos, imagery, text, or any other creative content to Instagram by Sunday 13th November. Remember to tag your submission with Fjällräven’s official Instagram account @fjallravenofficial, as well as #FjallravenPolar2023 and #Challenge3
