The three challenges of Fjällräven Polar 2024

Welcome to the Fjällräven Polar 2024 challenges. To earn your place on next year’s expedition, you will need to complete three challenges released weekly and published on this page from Monday 30th October 2023. Remember, there are no wrong answers – only your interpretation of the challenge, your creativity, and your passion. Read on for the full challenge descriptions. The best of luck!

Before you start, a quick reminder...

  • Every entry must also include the corresponding challenge hashtag: #Challenge1, #Challenge2 or #Challenge3.
  • Make sure you first read all the details on how to apply, here.

Challenge one

Give a voice to your local environment

The environment you call home can be described in an untold number of ways, through its history, heritage, flora, fauna or cultural identity. The environment Fjällräven Polar calls home is the Arctic. In winter, its sprawling woodlands and lakes become vast white-on-white landscapes, where intense snowstorms, desolate fells and shimmering Northern Lights become part of this magical but often harsh and unpredictable season.

We’d love you to tell the story of your local environment. What does your home turf mean to you? What features make it unique? And in what ways might you ensure that it’s looked after in the future?

Respond by uploading a video, photos, imagery or any other creative content to a public Instagram account by Sunday 19th November. Tag your submission with @fjallravenofficial, #FjallravenPolar2024 and #Challenge1.

Our take on Challenge 1:

The environment Fjällräven Polar calls home is the Arctic. In winter, its sprawling woodlands and lakes become vast white-on-white landscapes, where intense snowstorms, desolate fells and shimmering Northern Lights become part of this magical but often harsh and unpredictable season. It’s also home to the animal from which Fjällräven takes its name: the Arctic fox, one of the most ancient species on the Scandinavian peninsula. This small and inquisitive creature is perfectly adapted to the frigid conditions of the Arctic and can withstand temperatures as low as minus 70 degrees!

In Sweden, an experienced walker or adventurer who traverses the great Scandinavian outdoors is known as ‘a true Arctic fox’. A true Arctic fox was what a boy called Åke Nordin wanted to be when he grew up. And it was that curious little animal that came to mind when he started his company, Fjällräven, in 1960.

For us, the Arctic fox has also become a symbol for doing our bit to protect nature. Arctic foxes have been on the brink of extinction for a century, and face increasing challenges today due to climate change. The first project that Fjällräven worked on was the Save the Arctic Fox Project with Stockholm University, and we continue to support it today.

Challenge two

Love your gear longer

Here at Fjällräven, our clothing and equipment is designed to last a lifetime. However, the lifecycle of a product not only has to do with durable materials and timeless design, but how you care for it. Through the right care and repair, your gear will keep going, whether that’s up craggy mountains or on your daily commute.

How do you make your most loved gear last longer? Tell us about a garment or a piece of equipment you just can’t let go of. How have you repaired, modified or looked after it – and what adventures has it accompanied you on? It could be that trusty Anorak you bought in 1982, a battered and beloved hand-me-down or a newer piece of kit that you’re certain will be going on many adventures to come.

They say that the most sustainable product is the one you already own. Show us yours and tell us why it’s special to you.

Respond by uploading a video, photos, imagery or any other creative content to your public Instagram account by Sunday 19th November. Tag your submission with @fjallravenofficial, #FjallravenPolar2024 and #Challenge2.

Challenge three

Making nature your neighbour

Let’s put it simply: we love nature. And if you’ve got this far, we think you probably do, too. It’s proven to lower blood pressure, improve concentration, boost your immune system, and the benefits start kicking in after just 20 minutes of daily walks.

We believe that the more time we spend in nature, the more we grow appreciation, love and respect for it. Today, however, more of us live in urban areas, making nature harder to access. Perhaps you live in a big city, or maybe you can’t get out there quite as often as you’d like, even though it’s close by.

We want to know how you motivate yourself and those around you to spend more time in or around nature. What do you do, or indeed, what could you do to get closer to it? Perhaps you’ve started growing vegetables in your garden, maybe you’ve taught a family member something new about wildlife. Does it involve overcoming certain practical challenges if you live in the city?

We want your inspiring stories, big and small. Send us your tips, guidance and experiences of how you get closer to the great outdoors, wherever you’re located.

Respond by uploading a video, photos, imagery or any other creative content to your public Instagram account by Sunday 19th November. Tag your submission with @fjallravenofficial, #FjallravenPolar2024 and #Challenge3.
